God’s Calling For You

Many people go through life looking for God’s “calling” for them, but don’t realize that God’s calling for them has nothing to do with an earthly decision, job, or place. In Ephesians 4:1, we are beseeched (urged) to “walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,” but in order to walk worthy, we first need to know what the vocation we are called to is (Eph 1:18).

Consider this illustration: if we are appointed as the IT guy, but think we should be doing the HR job to be the best IT guy, or don’t even know we are the IT guy, we’ll be pretty terrible at our job. The same concept applies to us as members of the body of Christ. If we don’t know who we are in Christ, there is a zero percent chance we will walk according to the calling he has given us in him.

When we trust the gospel, we are instantly and supernaturally saved from sin and death and are placed in the body of Christ according to the grace of God (2 Tim 1:9-10). As a member of his body, you’ve been sanctified (1Co 6:11), you have the vocation of a saint (1 Cor 1:2), a minister of reconciliation, and an ambassador for Christ (2 Cor 5:18-21). While you did nothing to deserve these titles, Christ gave them to you the moment you were saved and were seated in heavenly places (Eph 1:3, Eph 2:6).

We have a high calling in Christ (Phil 4:3) and if we want to walk worthily of the vocation we’ve been freely given, the first step is to know what our vocation is and the responsibilities of that vocation.
