Are Your Secrets Safe?

Secret things are those that are private, concealed, or hidden from others’ knowledge. We as humans highly value those who can “keep a secret.” Why is that? Secret actions and secret thoughts tend to be prideful, vain, mischievous, and wicked (2Ki 17:9, Ps 10:3-10). After all, our hearts and the intents of them are “deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked” (Jer 17:9). Those thoughts and actions, if known, would bring about embarrassment and shame to us.

Our continuance in these secret sins stems from a disposition that no one will see or know the thought or action, so it’s justifiable (Psa 10:11, Jer 23:24). Our shortcomings and sin bring about shame and guilt, yet because of our pride, we accuse others of wrongdoing to lift ourselves up all while excusing our own shortcomings because “at least we’re not as bad as them.” (Rom 2:15). The comparisons we make among ourselves as guilty sinners are futile and unwise, for the measure is Christ’s perfection (Col 2:18, 2Co 10:12).

No one wants to be “found out” that they, like everyone else, fail continuously.

The problem with this behavior we all exhibit is that there is no secret thing to God (Job 15:11). He sees all the secrets of our hearts, the secret sins of our past, present, and future and it’s deemed worthy of death (Psa 44:21, Psa 90:8, Ecc 12:14, Mar 4:22, Rom 3:23, 6:23).

Therein lies the bad news and the good news: you are completely found out, yet, completely forgiven and loved in Christ (Eph 2:1-10, 4:32, 2Co 6:9).

There’s incredible freedom in that. Christ did all the work necessary to save you from the due punishment of your secret and not-so-secret sins. Through trusting in his death, burial, and resurrection to forgive you, you are liberated from the bondage of sin and death, and given the gift of eternal life (Rom 6:16-23, 1Co 15:1-4)

There’s no reason to hide, to continue to put on a façade because you can’t. God sees all, He knows all, and despite our shortcomings, He commended His love toward us by dying the death we deserve while we were dead in trespasses and sins (Rom 5:8, Col 2:13-14).

No, your secrets aren’t safe, but they don’t have to be. They’re fully exposed. There’s no need to fear being “found out” when being found in Him is the most glorious position to be in.

“[7] But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. [8] Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, [9] And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: [10] That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;” – Philippians 3:7-10
